Trump Threatens EU States with 100% Tariffs Over Digital Tax

US Donald Trump has again threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all goods from any country that levies a digital services tax on US companies.

Trump wrote on his platform that several European countries are considering introducing a digital tax on US companies. “Please let this statement serve as notice that any country imposing such a tax will immediately face a 100% tariff on all goods sent to the United States,” Trump said verbatim. The tariff would replace existing trade agreements.

Only in May, a US trade court blocked Trump’s latest attempt at a blanket 10% tariff, ruling that blanket tariffs are not covered by a 1970s trade law. However, court rulings do not deter Trump from new threats: earlier in June, he threatened 60 trading partners, including the UK, the EU, and Australia, with tariffs between 10 and 12.5 percent over alleged violations of forced labor requirements.
