Around 60 emergency personnel from the Isernhagen volunteer fire department searched for the child using a police helicopter and a sonar boat. Volunteers also formed a human chain to systematically comb the lake. Divers eventually found the boy after about two hours.
According to police, the child was at the lake with a friend of roughly the same age and an adult man. He was in the water and then disappeared from sight. Police were alerted shortly after 3:00 p.m. The boy was taken to a hospital under resuscitation but died that evening.
At the time of the accident, around 500 people were on the premises, according to the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung. The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear.
