The pension commission wants to abolish the rule allowing a deduction-free pension after 45 years of contributions. Pascal Reddig, a CDU politician involved in the commission, commented on the matter, stressing that a five-year transition period would be too long. He is calling for the rule to be ended as soon as possible.

“If we want to achieve a turnaround, we need to hurry and not let all the baby boomer generations retire early without deductions,” Reddig told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). He acknowledged, however, that protection of legitimate expectations is essential. “Those who have planned, for example, to retire early without deductions next year will certainly still be able to do so. But we cannot allow this much longer.”

Reddig was a member of the pension commission, which on Tuesday presented the government with 33 recommendations for a fundamental overhaul of retirement provision. The commission’s report proposes, among other things, abolishing early retirement without deductions after 45 years of contributions. This is known as the “pension at 63,” although in practice it is currently only possible from age 64.5.
