In front of more than 80,000 spectators at the New York New Jersey Stadium, England secured the group win. Despite the rain, Tuchel was enthusiastic about the atmosphere: “Fantastic backdrop, perfect weather to play football – in the rain!” The 52-year-old called it “a hard piece of work against a difficult opponent.”

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane scored the second goal with a header (67th minute) and surpassed Gary Lineker as England’s all-time top scorer at World Cups with eleven goals. Jude Bellingham had opened the scoring earlier (62nd minute). Tuchel also praised midfielder Elliot Anderson: “It’s impressive how he plays and trains.”

In the round of 32, England will face the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday (6 PM CEST) in Atlanta. Tuchel emphasized that the team would improve: “We will step up as the games get bigger.”
