The Greens sharply criticized the black-red federal government at their party conference in Sassnitz, blaming it for the heated mood in the country. Felix Banaszak said: “Whoever lectures and insults their population for over a year, telling them they are too lazy and need to finally do something and work more, bears co-responsibility for the heated mood in the country.” The party aims to present itself as a serious alternative in the democratic center.

Green party leader Franziska Brantner accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of having told people for years that the state must spend less. The Left believes it must take in less. “But I tell you, whoever tells you that one of these alone is enough is talking bullshit. Whether from the left or from the right.” The Greens are calling for both higher taxes on the wealthy and smart spending on schools, health, and pensions.

Parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann accused the coalition of “ignorance toward climate protection” and called the federal government a “total failure.” The Greens are relying on socially just reforms and regional electricity prices to strengthen climate protection. However, polls in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania show the Greens performing poorly, and they fear failing to enter the state parliaments.
