The officer’s body showed no signs of violence, according to initial findings, the Southern Operational Command said. The final cause of death will be determined after the investigation is completed.
The command said it is providing full support to investigators. In a statement, the leadership praised Kononnikov as “an officer devoted to Ukraine and the military” and a “responsible commander.”
The 154th Separate Brigade was formed in 2023 and has fought in the Zaporizhzhia region, including in Huliaipole.
