In Cologne’s old town, Omar observes a restrained enthusiasm: “The World Cup fever hasn’t broken out yet, but it’s slightly there. People are buying small flags, the bucket hat is selling surprisingly well.” He hopes for a win, then business will pick up significantly. Fan Daniel Schuster, standing outside a brewery, is optimistic: “We can do it when it counts. The team now has to finally show that it has learned from its mistakes.” His girlfriend Jana is disappointed with the performance against Ecuador but hopes for a reaction.
At the Brauhaus Früh am Dom, the World Cup mood is in full swing, says Claudia Bade: “We’re experiencing the football summer entirely positively. The atmosphere is really great, the weather is cooperating.” Christel Hartmann, who will watch the game with her family, also wishes for more courage in the tackles. She can’t understand the criticism of the team: “Let’s just cheer on the team and hope we get as far as possible.”
