Holstein Kiel start preseason with fun and new signings

Holstein Kiel began preparations for the new 2. Bundesliga season on Monday without setting a specific goal. Around 500 fans watched the first session at Gettorfer SC, according to NDR.

Coach Tim Walter made the losers of the final training game do cartwheels across the pitch for the fans’ amusement. “It was really fun, and it’s not as hot as the last few days,” said midfielder Jonas Meffert. The recent heat did not prevent the start, but fitness tests on June 26 and 27 were moved to early morning hours.

Several new signings were already present: Giorgi Kvilitaia, whose signing was officially announced shortly before, as well as two Japanese players, Taisei Abe and Hiroki Sekine. Abe is set to strengthen the defensive midfield, Sekine the right defense. Both are on loan, but Holstein secured purchase options. Meffert, who spent his vacation in Japan, expressed delight at the new teammates.

Head coach Walter, whose contract was extended until 2027, announced further reinforcements. He was in daily contact with sporting director Olaf Rebbe during the summer break. Walter had led Kiel out of the relegation battle last season with six unbeaten matches in a row. He declined to set a sporting goal for the new season.

Defender Alexander Bernhardson was absent, as he is participating in the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada with Sweden — making him the first Holstein player to feature at a World Cup. Preseason friendlies against Al Ahli and Mainz 05, as well as a training camp in Maria Alm, are scheduled. The 2. Bundesliga starts on the weekend of August 7–9.
