The Meteor missiles, manufactured by the European defense conglomerate MBDA, are among the most advanced air-to-air weapons, with a range of over 100 kilometers. Jonson stated that equipping the Gripen fleet with long-range capabilities is part of an “aviation coalition” comprising Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the United States.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the Meteor missiles could become a key factor in Ukraine’s technological edge. They are expected to allow earlier threat detection and more effective engagement of enemy aircraft, particularly those launching guided glide bombs (KABs).
The missile delivery runs parallel to the Gripen jets. Just on Tuesday, Ukraine signed a contract to purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets, set to arrive from 2029. Additionally, older Gripen C/D models will be provided as military aid, with the first units expected in 2027.
