The match kicks off at 1am UK time and will run until at least 3am. England qualified for the last-16 after beating the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday evening. The government extended licensing hours by order following heavy criticism of the original rules.

The Home Secretary used his power to extend closing times for events of “exceptional international, national, or local significance.” Communities Minister Steve Reed informed local authorities of the change. Previously, pubs had to apply five working days in advance for an extension beyond 2am – a deadline many had missed.

Starmer said: “Football might be coming home, but we’re making sure fans don’t have to go home. Pubs staying open until the final whistle is good news for fans and for the pubs and locals that bring our communities together. The whole country will be cheering the team on. Come on, England!” The decision followed pressure from Mayor Sadiq Khan and numerous MPs.

The hospitality industry welcomed the move. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: “Pubs and fans will be over the moon with this decision, because we all know the best place to watch the game is the local pub.”
