Kurku disclosed the connection on Thursday evening. In a statement sent by his lawyer, he expressed his “deepest sympathy” to the victims and their families. The woman described in media reports as a “godmother” is actually his mother-in-law, the lawmaker said. He informed the investigative authorities and his professional environment. The lawyer emphasized that Kurku had no prior knowledge of the possible events before the crime.

A spokesperson for the state government told NDR that the family connection has no direct impact on Kurku’s voluntary role as state commissioner. Kurku is highly respected and carries out his duties “with the greatest personal commitment.” Minister Olaf Lies wished Kurku and his family the necessary strength to cope with the situation.

The 65-year-old woman is alleged to have driven the 45-year-old suspect to the crime scene and acted as the driver of the getaway car after the crime. The Stade public prosecutor’s office did not request an arrest warrant. Whether and what charges will be filed will be determined after the investigation is complete. The suspect was arrested on Monday while fleeing.
