Friedrich Merz (CDU) promoted the reform package recently passed by the coalition during Wednesday evening broadcasts on ARD and ZDF. He also addressed the planned tax increase for top earners, calling the slightly higher wealth tax ‘acceptable.’ The governing coalition had previously agreed on a comprehensive package of measures that includes tax adjustments.
Merz admitted he personally ‘would have liked more,’ but stressed the need for compromise. The reform is an important step to secure economic stability and strengthen social justice, he said. The chancellor appealed to citizens to support the plans and asked for understanding regarding the difficult negotiations within the coalition.
