Wagenknecht Slams Reform as ‘Fooling the People’

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the BSW party, has sharply criticized the planned tax reform by the black-red coalition, calling it a 'Volksveralberung' (fooling the people). She argues that the promised relief of 600 euros includes 312 euros from child benefits, which she says amounts to deceiving the public.

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the BSW party, has criticized the tax reform announced by the black-red coalition as a ‘Volksveralberung’ (fooling the people). She objected that of the 600 euros touted as relief, 312 euros come from child benefits. ‘Counting a family benefit, whose adjustment is long overdue given inflation, as a tax relief is lying to the public,’ Wagenknecht said.

‘That nothing is happening is blatant government failure,’ she said. She stressed that families will spend more at gas stations during the upcoming summer holidays than they could benefit from the tax reform.

The coalition plans to reform income tax as of January 1, 2027, to relieve low and middle incomes in particular. A total of around ten billion euros per year is to be provided for this purpose. The approval of the Bundesrat is required for the implementation of the reform.
