The Gallery of Modern Art on the Schleswig Museum Island has reopened after a two-year closure. Instead of the former museum white, bold colors now dominate the walls, not overpowering the expressionist works by Nolde, Alexej von Jawlensky, and the Brücke artists but engaging them in a new dialogue. Curator Uta Kuhl explained: “We were able to implement a completely new concept here. The works enter into a dialogue, and we have a chronological presentation from the strong expressionist beginnings around 1900/1910 to the present.”

The collection includes works by 130 artists, featuring both well-known names and rediscovered positions. A special room is dedicated to the dialogue between Ernst Barlach’s bronze sculpture “The Floating One” and works by his close friend Käthe Kollwitz. The rooms lead chronologically through the eras: from the wild twenties with Georg Tappert’s clowns and nude dancers, through the upheavals of the world wars, to contemporary art. The tour deliberately ends in a dead end to open new perspectives on the works when looking back.

The exhibition is complemented by the recently announced donation of the Horn Collection to the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Christina Feilchenfeldt praised the presentation: “It was important to us that the character of the collection is recognizable, especially now at the first presentation, and that has been nicely implemented.” The gallery also plans guided tours and concerts. Outside, Danish artist Benedikte Bjerre draws attention to climate change and consumption with an installation.
