Ahead of the round of 16 match against England, Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum has urged fans to exercise caution. Following several deaths during celebrations, additional security measures are being implemented.

Mexico, co-host of the FIFA World Cup, has announced additional measures ahead of the decisive match against England. Claudia Sheinbaum addressed fans in a press conference, asking them to celebrate responsibly and avoid crowded places. This follows several deaths during jubilant celebrations in recent days.

“I ask everyone to behave very responsibly, to avoid places where, according to authorities, there are already many people, and to celebrate responsibly,” she said at a press conference in Mexico City. To enhance safety, an alcohol ban will be imposed on street and square celebrations. “Whenever there is alcohol abuse at such festivities, problems can arise, such as increased violence, which is precisely linked to excessive alcohol consumption,” Sheinbaum explained.

During celebrations around the landmark “Ángel de la Independencia,” four people have recently died. To disperse large crowds, 60 free screening locations will be set up in the city. Additionally, road closures and temporary shutdowns of metro stations near the “Ángel de la Independencia” are being considered.
