Colombia has reached the round of 16 at the World Cup. The team beat Ghana 1-0 (1-0).

The goal came early: Jhon Arias (14th minute) sent the South Americans into the round of 16 for the fourth time overall. It was the only goal of the match, which Colombia dominated but remained tight. Around 50,000 Colombian fans celebrated the victory in Kansas City’s stadium.

Jhon Arias (14th minute) sent the South Americans into the round of 16 for the fourth time overall, marking the third win in a World Cup knockout match after 1990 and 2014. Their next opponent will be Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver. Colombia had topped their group ahead of Portugal in the preliminary round.

Ghana, meanwhile, missed the chance to become the third African representative in the round of 16. Black Stars could have followed Morocco and Egypt as the third team from Africa. Their best World Cup result remains reaching the quarterfinals in 2010.

Díaz was one of the most noticeable players against Ghana, but his goal in the 56th minute was disallowed for offside.
