In the early hours of July 4, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil terminal in St. Petersburg. Russian Telegram channels reported explosions around 6:30 a.m. local time and published footage purportedly showing black smoke over the port district. The Kyiv Independent cannot independently verify the reports.

The affected terminal at the Great Port of St. Petersburg on the Gulf of Finland is one of Russia’s largest fuel storage and export sites. It handles 12.5 million tons of petroleum products annually, according to its own data. The extent of the damage was initially unclear. Russian authorities said dozens of drones were shot down in the Leningrad Oblast.

St. Petersburg, the hometown of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, lies about 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and has rarely been targeted during Russia’s war of aggression. In recent months, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck targets in heavily protected cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg. The attack came a day after Putin announced large-scale missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities.
