Peter Magyar has announced that the duration of parliamentary service in Hungary will be limited to twelve years in the future. This new regulation is part of a package of constitutional amendments he has introduced in parliament.
In mid-June, Magyar’s Tisza party, with its two-thirds majority in parliament, passed a constitutional amendment limiting the prime minister’s term to eight years. This rule is intended to prevent the recently ousted Viktor Orban from becoming head of government again.
The limitation on parliamentary service was not part of Magyar’s election promises and has drawn criticism from parts of the public. Nevertheless, Magyar said there has also been strong support.
The new regulation takes effect with the next parliamentary election, scheduled for 2030, and does not affect the current parliament. However, it would prevent the 63-year-old Orban from running for parliament in four years.
