Shortly after midnight, air raid sirens wailed in Kyiv, followed by heavy explosions. According to authorities, air alerts were triggered in nearly all regions of Ukraine. The attackers used dozens of cruise missiles and rockets in addition to numerous drones.
Ukraine’s air defense achieves a relatively high interception rate against drones and cruise missiles, it is largely powerless against ballistic missiles. These are difficult to intercept due to their high speed. Several buildings were damaged in Kyiv; exact casualty figures were not immediately available.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had already warned of a new wave of attacks on Sunday. He cited intelligence information indicating that Vladimir Putin would order heavy airstrikes before the NATO summit in Ankara. Zelensky appealed to partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.
