The accident happened at the stadium in Mexico City immediately after the final whistle. Henderson had been celebrating with his teammates and fans, and on his way back across the pitch he jumped over an advertising board and fell awkwardly. Coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the injury: “He has injured his wrist. He is currently in hospital. It is a fairly serious injury.”
Images from inside the stadium showed Henderson on a stretcher; he was given oxygen and shielded by teammates. He was then taken to a hospital in Mexico City and did not travel back with the rest of the squad to the training camp in Kansas City. According to US portal The Athletic, he will undergo surgery.
Henderson, who plays for Brentford, was a surprise inclusion in Tuchel’s World Cup squad. During the tournament he only featured in the closing stages of the final group game against Panama (2-0). England face Norway in the quarter-final on Saturday (23:00 CEST) and will already be without Jarell Quansah (suspended) and Reece James (injured).
