The 9th Duke of Wellington has lost his hereditary seat in the House of Lords after the Labour government expelled all hereditary peers. He is not fighting the move but instead calls for a complete overhaul of the upper chamber.

The Labour government fulfilled an election promise and expelled all hereditary peers from the House of Lords – their number had been limited to 90 members three decades ago. Two dozen experienced parliamentarians were allowed to stay on condition that they change their status and return as newly appointed life peers.

Wellington is now officially no longer styled as “Duke of Wellington” but as “Baron Wellington of Stratfield Saye” – an addition referring to the family estate west of London. He calls the Brexit “extremely disappointing.”
