Solbakken said before the match on Saturday (11:00 PM / MagentaTV) that the encounter is a very special one for him. “Kevin Keegan was my great hero. My team was always Liverpool, but Kevin was my man,” the 58-year-old said. He hopes Keegan is doing well and added: “I want to send him greetings from here and say: Keep fighting!”
Keegan made public in early June that he had been diagnosed with advanced cancer. The disease was discovered after a car accident during an operation and has already spread to several parts of his body. His doctor puts the former England and Hamburg striker’s chances of recovery at 33 percent.
Solbakken himself experienced a serious health crisis 25 years ago. At the age of 33, he suffered a heart attack during training, was resuscitated, lay in a coma, and ended his playing career after having a pacemaker fitted.
