Summer holidays have begun in almost all German states, and the ADAC expects this weekend to be the peak of travel traffic. Heavy traffic is expected especially on routes heading south as well as to the North and Baltic Seas, including the A1 from Cologne to Fehmarn, the A7 from Füssen to Flensburg, or the A95 from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Around 1,000 construction sites and several closures are worsening the situation. The A40 between Mülheim an der Ruhr-Winkhausen and the Essen-Ost junction is completely closed for a week starting today. The A46 between Wuppertal-Barmen and Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen will remain closed over the weekend. Summer holidays have also begun in many neighboring countries such as Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, and Denmark, meaning many additional holidaymakers and transit travelers are on the road.
The ADAC advises planning trips outside peak hours if possible – Monday and Tuesday as well as late evening or early morning hours are particularly suitable. Due to border controls at all German border crossings, returnees must expect delays, especially at the Suben (A3), Walserberg (A8), and Kiefersfelden (A93) crossings, as well as Ludwigsdorf (A4) and Frankfurt/Oder (A12).
