Elif Eralp, the lead candidate for the Left party in the Berlin election on September 20, has called for more restraint after the Islamist terror attack in the capital. She rejects a hasty tightening of security laws and emphasizes that the crime must first be fully investigated.

“I don’t believe in quick fixes,” Eralp said on RBB’s “Inforadio.” She expressed concerns about the release from pre-trial detention of the attacker, who had previously been convicted of attempting to join the Islamic State militia. She also said it must be clarified why there were surveillance gaps, even though the perpetrator had been classified as an Islamist threat.

In the attack on Saturday, several pedestrians were hit by a car before the attacker injured more people with a machete. One woman was killed and 31 people were injured, some seriously. The attacker was shot dead by police on Sunday evening.

On Monday morning, the interior committee of the Berlin House of Representatives is dealing with the attack.
