On Sunday, a Ukrainian couple was beaten by three men in the Polish city of Wrocław. Police have so far arrested two suspects. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recalled that just a few years ago, the world admired the solidarity of Poles with refugees from Ukraine – “All of that is now being destroyed,” he said.
Polish and Ukrainian media are analyzing the shift in mood. The newspaper Rzeczpospolita calls on politicians to intervene: The right likes to boast that Poland is a safe country where women can walk alone at night – “unless they are migrants themselves, like the Ukrainian woman who was attacked.” It is high time to say “Enough!” and stop the normalization of violence.
The weekly Tygodnik Powszechny speaks of a public climate described as “unsettled,” resulting from “vile prejudices” fueled by Russian propaganda and the country’s own political class. Ukrainian outlet European Pravda appeals to Brussels: Attitudes toward Ukrainians have worsened among a third of Poles, and the Polish state appears unable to solve the problem – and has partly exacerbated it itself. The EU could be the most influential voice here.
