The transitional housing facility on Max-von-Eyth-Straße in Ismaning has been occupied since Monday. The first residents have moved in, and more are expected to follow in the coming months. The 66 rooms are intended for ethnic German late resettlers, Jewish emigrants from the successor states of the Soviet Union, and people from humanitarian admission programs—including primarily former Afghan local staff and their families.
The facility can accommodate up to 190 people. The residents are not asylum seekers in the traditional sense: they already have a right of residence upon entry, are allowed to work, and can rent their own apartment. The government of Upper Bavaria acknowledges that finding housing is difficult given the tight rental market, but offers support.
Protests had formed against the accommodation, including from a citizens’ initiative linked to the party “Die Basis.” Ismaning’s mayor, Alexander Greulich (SPD), criticizes the short notice given about the move-in and points to full daycare centers and schools. The government points to financial aid for municipalities.
