The SPD parliamentary group has criticized the rules on family reunification for refugees with subsidiary protection status as too strict. A year ago, the federal government put a stop to the reunification of these individuals. Rasha Nasr, the group’s migration policy spokesperson, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) that the restrictive rules led to too few successful applications and that the permitted separation periods for children and parents were unreasonable.
Nasr demanded: “What is clear is that the rule cannot be extended beyond two years.” She added: “Work must begin now on preparing the pending applications so that no further waiting times arise after the rule expires in summer 2027.”
Truels Reichardt, the SPD parliamentary group’s children’s commissioner, also called for the full restoration of family reunification. He said: “Because the special protection of the family is enshrined in the Basic Law.” He stressed that the aim is simply to bring the nuclear family back together.
