In the early hours of Friday, Houthi militias struck targets directly inside Saudi Arabia. At least eleven people were injured in the attacks. Earlier, the Houthis had already attacked several Saudi ships or forced them to change course.
The UN’s most powerful body issued a statement overnight condemning the attacks, saying they threatened regional security and freedom of navigation. The Houthis were urged to refrain from further escalation and instead use dialogue channels.
The UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned on X of a new major conflict, saying the risk is higher than at any time since the UN-brokered ceasefire in April 2022. The country could be drawn into a broader regional confrontation with devastating consequences for the population.
The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis reignited a few weeks ago with airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. In further Houthi attacks in Marib province, at least two civilians were killed, according to government sources. The escalation also threatens to complicate a peace deal in the war between the US and Iran, as pressure grows on Washington and Riyadh to respond militarily.
