The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe has reminded the Bundestag of its duty to examine objections to the 2025 federal election more quickly. In a ruling, the judges pointed to the record so far: of a total of 1,041 objections, only 450 have been processed. The previous Bundestag had decided on about 2,000 objections in a comparable period.
Specifically, the court rejected an objection concerning the five-percent threshold in the 2025 election. The complaint was inadmissible because the Bundestag had not yet decided on it. Karlsruhe barely commented on the substance of the electoral threshold, which stipulates that only parties with more than five percent of the second votes enter parliament.
The court also criticized the composition of the election review committee: although the Bundestag first convened in March 2025, its members were not elected until three months later. The court saw no compelling reason for this delay. Election review must not miss its purpose, namely to secure the legitimacy of parliament.
