Bovenschulte, head of government of Bremen, expressed confidence that the AfD will not provide the minister-president after the state election on September 6. “At the end of the election, the democratic forces will come out on top,” he said. But that requires hard work and convincing voters.
The AfD is far ahead of the CDU of Sven Schulze in Saxony-Anhalt polls. The state branch is classified by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as definitely right-wing extremist. Bovenschulte stressed that one must clearly seek confrontation with the AfD and offer alternatives.
The Bundesrat had already tightened its rules of procedure in 2025. Since then, the Bundesrat president and deputies can be removed by a two-thirds majority, and unscheduled sessions require two states. The representation rule was also changed: if the entire presidium is unavailable, the most senior member takes over – for the foreseeable future, not an AfD politician.
Bovenschulte sees no room for disruption in the chamber of states: “The Bundesrat is perhaps the body in which the atmosphere would change the least.” There is neither applause nor expressions of disapproval; the debate is factual and follows strict rules.
