Krach, who is running as the SPD’s top candidate in Berlin, demanded, among other things, that the planned cuts to housing benefits be withdrawn. These often hit single parents and many pensioners who can no longer afford their rent. Many hard-working people depend on the subsidy.
Regarding the cabinet decision, Krach said: “I really think this is absolutely the wrong path.” He expects the reform package to be changed during the parliamentary process. The federal government had presented it in early July.
Krach was cautious in his comments on the internal party debate about a possible replacement of SPD leaders Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil, who are also ministers. “We will not convince anyone with internal personnel debates,” he said. Instead, the party must score points with substance again.
Recently, there has been resistance within the SPD to the policies of its own ministers in the black-red government. Party members are calling for a special party conference in the autumn and a decision between party leadership and ministerial office. Possible dates include the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6 and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin on September 20.
