Following the Russian strike on a shopping mall in Kryvy Rih, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday, August 21. According to the Kyiv Post, the conversation focused on ongoing Russian attacks, civilian casualties, and threats to global food security.

At least 14 people were killed and more than 121 injured in the attack on the shopping mall in Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvy Rih. 29 of the injured, including five children, are in serious condition. In a Telegram statement, Zelensky condemned the attack as an “absolutely cynical and despicable strike on an ordinary shopping center” and called such attacks “acts of terrorism.”

During the call with Guterres, Zelensky stressed that Russia had rejected proposals to return to the negotiating table. He said: “We have agreed to continue the search for ways” and that “the UN will join the joint effort.” Guterres condemned the large-scale Russian attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

The two also discussed the impact of Russian attacks on food security, particularly on Ukraine’s port infrastructure and ships. Zelensky said the consequences were already being felt in many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, where prices were beginning to rise.
