In the night of August 28, Russian forces again attacked Ukraine with a massive wave of drones. The strikes targeted the capital Kyiv and other regions, hitting warehouses, businesses, and shopping centers. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had launched a total of 164 attack drones since the evening of August 27, about half of which were Shahed-type loitering munitions.
Air defense shot down or neutralized 137 drones, according to official figures. Nevertheless, impacts were recorded at 16 locations, with debris falling at four more sites. In the Kyiv region, one person was killed and two others injured in a morning attack. Authorities report damage to 14 warehouses, 16 private houses, three apartment buildings, and 16 vehicles across several districts of the region.
The attacks have severely disrupted rail traffic across Ukraine. Dozens of trains are running ten to fifteen hours late, according to Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia). The company’s CEO, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, said infrastructure in the Kyiv region had been damaged and was being repaired on an emergency basis. Trains are not being canceled, the company said, but the many security stops have triggered a chain reaction of delays.
Writer Lyubov Yakymchuk reported on her channel that her train from Kyiv to Dnipro was already an hour and a half late, while other connections, such as Kharkiv–Lviv, were expected to run almost fifteen hours behind schedule. She described the situation at the station: “In Kyiv, there were 13 air alerts within 24 hours. As I say: all clear, and before that – alert.” During another alert, passengers were told to leave the station, and air defense could be heard outside.
The railway company has set up free waiting areas and is providing food to travelers. Those who give up their trip due to the long delays receive a full refund. In Zaporizhzhia, a drone struck a hardware store overnight, sparking a fire that injured at least four people. In the Kyiv region, warehouses of the book publishers A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA and Vivat were also destroyed.
