The attack began after 2 a.m. and came in several waves. While about ten Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the south flew toward Kyiv, Russia fired dozens of ballistic missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles from the north. At the same time, Shahed drone attacks continued.
In Kyiv, three people were killed, and one more in Boryspil. More than ten people were injured. The city administration reported extensive destruction and damaged buildings, especially on the left bank of the capital. The regional administration reported the destruction of a five-story residential building and a death at a company.
Ballistic missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles can only be intercepted by Patriot systems, for which Ukraine critically lacks missiles. Kalibr cruise missiles can also be intercepted by other air defense systems.
The attack was the culmination of an uninterrupted Shahed drone assault on Kyiv and the region that had been ongoing since August 27. Russia continuously uses small groups of drones to paralyze life in the city. Already on August 28, such an attack on the village of Myla in the Kyiv region killed 38 people when a military camp was hit.
