A week before Bavaria’s autumn holidays, which start on 2 November, Munich’s stages offer several shows for young children. We picked three events for ages four and up and note what the organisers actually publish about prices and booking.
Puppet theatre: “Pu, der Bär” at Schauburg Labor. The Swiss company Figurentheater Margrit Gysin retells A. A. Milne’s story of Winnie-the-Pooh and his stuffed-toy friends in the nursery. It is part of the “wunder.” international puppet theatre festival, running from 21 October to 1 November and marking its 30th edition. Performances: Saturday 24 October at 4 pm, Sunday 25 October at 3 pm and Monday 26 October at 10 am, each about 45 minutes. Venue: Schauburg Labor, Rosenheimer Straße 192, Munich-Ramersdorf-Perlach. Recommended from age four; performed in German and Swiss German. That may be a hurdle for children still learning German, though puppetry relies heavily on images and movement, so it is probably worth a try. Tickets are sold via the programme on schauburg.net; the pages list no prices. At the festival box office, cash only.
Join-in jazz: “Balduin und der Jazz” at Bergson. On Sunday 25 October, 11 am to noon (doors 10.30 am), the chaotic theatre director Balduin Ubinga, played by Maximilian Maier, leads children through blues, boogie-woogie and scat singing with trumpet, piano, drums and double bass. Recommended from age four; venue is Bergson Kunstkraftwerk, Am Bergson Kunstkraftwerk 2, 81245 Munich. The organiser says children under 14 get in free thanks to Stadtsparkasse München; adults pay €26 (Social), €32 (Fair) or €38 (Support). Booking is online via the event page; according to its description no separate child ticket is needed, but it is safest to ask Bergson beforehand.
Mozart for kids: Kindermusikfest at the Künstlerhaus. Also on Sunday 25 October, from 11 am, the Münchner Künstlerhaus at Lenbachplatz 8 hosts a children’s music festival for Mozart’s 270th birthday, with Julian Janssen, known as “Checker Julian”. It is aimed at ages 4 to 10. The family calendar lists no admission price; information and tickets are at kuenstlerhaus-muc.de or on 089 599184-0.
A little planning helps: Bergson and the Künstlerhaus both start at 11 am, so you have to pick one, and “Pu, der Bär” at 3 pm fits the afternoon. Note too that the clocks go back to winter time overnight on 25 October, so 11 am is already the new time (more here). From 22 October (opening at 7.30 pm) to 25 October, the paper theatre festival also runs at the Kleines Theater im Pförtnerhaus (Oberföhringer Straße 156): according to München mit Kind, there are miniature fairy tales for children aged five and up and separate shows for older audiences; times are on the festival site. More ideas for the holiday weeks up to 8 November are in our earlier round-up.
