The A99 will be completely closed for three days between the München-Süd and München-Ost motorway interchanges. That is what Autobahn GmbH des Bundes has announced. The reason is the demolition of the bridge carrying Bundesstraße 304 over the eastern bypass near Haar. Autobahn GmbH is therefore already calling on people to “avoid all unnecessary car journeys” during this period.
According to Autobahn GmbH, the bridge, built in 1973, is in “such a poor structural condition” that only complete dismantling is an option. With a partial demolition, there would be a risk that the remaining bridge could collapse uncontrolled onto the carriageway of the A99, the authority’s statement says. Since August, traffic on the B304 has already been running over a temporary bridge south of the old crossing. According to Autobahn GmbH, it will remain in operation until the replacement new build is completed at the end of 2028.
Up to 160,000 vehicles a day
The eastern bypass is one of the busiest motorway sections in central Europe: up to 160,000 vehicles travel there every day, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung writes. The old bridge alone is used by around 38,000 vehicles per day. Damage had been identified in an inspection in May 2025, and construction of the temporary bridge began in spring 2026.
According to its own statements, Autobahn GmbH deliberately chose the “weekend with the least traffic of the year”. Nevertheless, it warns of massive strain, especially for the road network across the entire Munich city area. Journeys to the trade fair in Riem or to the airport in the Erdinger Moos are likely to take considerably longer. The authority also expects significant traffic disruption in the districts of Munich, Ebersberg and Erding.
There is no recommended diversion route. According to Autobahn GmbH, the possible alternative routes B304 and B471 are already heavily used even without the closure. A large part of the traffic will therefore have to divert through the city, t-online writes. Significant disruption is also to be expected on the A94 and on small-scale alternative routes. Queues and diverted traffic can also affect traffic to Munich Airport, the Messe München exhibition centre and the Allianz Arena.
Long-distance traffic should bypass Munich over a wide area
Lorry traffic will already be directed in Würzburg onto the route via the A7, the A96 and the Arlberg tunnel towards the Brenner. In Nuremberg, at the Inntaldreieck and at the Salzburg motorway junction, there are to be signs advising drivers to travel via Linz and Nuremberg and avoid the greater Munich area. In the Nuremberg area, road users with suitable destinations are to be made aware of a wide-area route via the A3 towards Regensburg and Passau.
During the closure, the Hohenbrunn and Ottobrunn junctions in the direction of Salzburg will remain open, as will the Haar junction in the direction of Nuremberg and Stuttgart. Autobahn GmbH asks people in the affected regions to switch to public local transport wherever possible. “This is necessary above all in order to keep rescue routes open for the police, fire service and emergency services,” a spokesperson for the authority warned, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Anyone who depends on a car that weekend should allow significantly more travel time. t-online recommends checking the current traffic situation before setting off and postponing journeys if possible. For Autobahn GmbH, the closure is at the same time the starting signal for the new build: after the old bridge is demolished, a new crossing is to be built in the same place, and it is due to be completed at the end of 2028.
