The main registration round for Munich’s 2027/28 Kita year closes on 3 March. How the kita finder+ portal works, what to prepare and where to get free advice.

Parents in Munich who want a childcare place from September 2027 have until 3 March 2027 to register. The city names that Wednesday as the last regular registration day for the 2027/28 Kita year; places start being allocated the next day.

Registration runs through the city’s kita finder+ portal. You create an account, enter details for yourself and your child, and can register the child at several centres at once. Each registration puts the child on that centre’s waiting list. Signing up online is free.

“Preferred” is not a guarantee

For children up to six, one centre can be marked as “preferred”. The city is explicit that this creates no entitlement to that place. Our assessment: entering only one Kita is an avoidable risk. A sensible mix is a first choice, one close to home, and a backup or two along your commuting route.

The portal also has a limit: it lists only municipal centres and the city’s “Häuser für Kinder”. Church-run, parent-run and other independent providers do not register there, so you must ask them directly and follow their own deadlines.

Regular care starts on 1 September. Offers appear in your account, and an offer not accepted within ten days lapses – worth remembering if you will be travelling without internet.

Missed the date? Your registration stays valid

Nothing is lost after 3 March. You can apply for free places at any time, and if nothing is available for your preferred start, the registration remains valid for another five months and the start date can be changed online. Even so, families who register in the main round have a clearly better chance of a September place.

For context, children in Germany have a legal right to early childhood care from their first birthday and to a kindergarten place from age three. That does not entitle anyone to a specific centre, which is why registering widely makes sense.

One requirement is often overlooked: measles protection. From age one, proof of at least one vaccination or immunity is needed; from age two, full protection with two doses. Accepted proof is the yellow child health booklet or vaccination card, a doctor’s certificate, or confirmation from the previous centre. Unvaccinated children can be excluded. If your records are from Ukraine, have a paediatrician in Germany check them in good time.

Fees vary by centre. For municipal Kitas, a fee reduction can be applied for under certain conditions; the city explains the details on its service pages.

The city’s free parent advice service (children aged zero to ten) can help: phone 089 233-96771 or kita-eltern@muenchen.de. No appointment is needed by phone on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.30am to noon; appointments are available Monday and Tuesday 1.30–5pm and on Thursday. In-person visits at Landsberger Straße 30 are by arrangement only. For technical portal questions, the city’s Kita department can be reached on 089 233-96775 or at kita.rbs@muenchen.de. The city’s pages are available in Ukrainian and Russian; whether the advice itself is offered in those languages should be checked beforehand.
