In the past two weeks, three tragic e-scooter accidents in Ukraine have claimed the lives of children. A 10-year-old boy died after being struck by a car at an intersection in the Kyiv region. His 8-year-old friend is in critical condition in the hospital. In another incident in Khmelnytskyi, an 11-year-old boy died after falling from an e-scooter, while a 14-year-old teenager in Lviv injured a 2-year-old girl, who was hospitalized with head injuries.
The police warn that e-scooters pose a serious danger to children's safety. The popularity of these vehicles has surged in recent years, yet there is a lack of legal regulations to control their use. This has led to an increase in injuries and fatalities, underscoring the urgency for action.
Social media users are calling for a ban on e-scooters for children under 16 and stricter penalties for parents. Discussions are also taking place in Parliament regarding necessary measures to enhance safety. Documentary filmmaker Anna Tsyhyma expressed concern over the uncontrolled use of e-scooters by youths, who often ride without rules and an understanding of the dangers.
