The European Union (EU) is planning to invite representatives of the radical Taliban government to a meeting in Brussels to discuss deportations to Afghanistan. According to a spokesperson for the EU Commission, a technical-level meeting with the de facto authorities in Afghanistan is currently being prepared.

Informed sources reported that a letter is to be sent to Kabul soon to arrange a date for the discussions in Brussels. This meeting follows two trips by European representatives to Afghanistan, which aimed to explore possible deportations of Afghan nationals from the EU back to their home country.

Although the EU does not officially recognize the Taliban authorities, around 20 EU countries are seeking deportations to Afghanistan. Human rights organizations have expressed concerns, as Afghanistan is facing a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by drought and drastic cuts in foreign aid.

Since the Taliban regained power in August 2021 and declared an Islamic Emirate, they have been enforcing their strict interpretation of Islam with draconian laws. In Germany, more than a hundred Afghans have already been deported since 2024, despite the German government not recognizing the Taliban as the legitimate Afghan government.
