The debate among EU foreign ministers regarding direct negotiations with Putin to end the war in Ukraine has led to tensions. According to Euronews, several ministers expressed concerns about the viability of such an approach, while others emphasized the need to keep diplomatic channels open.

Thomas Byrne, Ireland's Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, stated, "We must consider all options to achieve peace." In contrast, Stephen Doughty, the UK's Minister of State for Europe, pointed out that direct talks with the Kremlin leader could be risky and that the EU should not give the impression of legitimizing Russia.

The discussion occurs against the backdrop of the EU's ongoing pressure to develop a unified strategy towards Russia. Massimiliano Giansanti, president of the Copa umbrella organization, stressed the importance of a clear EU position to protect the interests of European agriculture.

The disagreements among the foreign ministers reflect the varying national interests within the EU. Some countries are concerned about the economic impacts of the war, while others push for a tougher stance against Russia.
