In Atlanta, the Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 (1-0) draw — a result that does little for either team. The favored Czechs took the lead through Michal Sadilek in the 6th minute but then faded. South Africa equalized from a handball penalty converted by Teboho Mokoena in the 83rd minute.
“We played good football at the start. But after the goal, we strayed from our path and let the opponent back into the game. We were too passive,” lamented Hoffenheim’s Adam Hlozek. “It’s not over for us yet. Three points would have helped us a lot, of course; now it will be very tough against Mexico. But we will keep fighting.”
It was the first point of the tournament for both the Czech Republic and South Africa. Both teams have one point after two matchdays. In Group A, Mexico and South Korea still face each other on the second matchday. The Czech Republic likely needs a win in its final group game against Mexico to reach the round of 16.
