The accident happened in the Berchtesgaden National Park. Initial findings suggest the man fell for reasons still unknown after leaving the climbing route. Other climbers found the victim and alerted rescue services.
Rescuers could only confirm the death of the 59-year-old. The body was recovered with the help of the mountain rescue service and a police helicopter.
A police mountain guide from the Alpine Response Unit has taken over the investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
