Following the deaths of several Mexican migrants during operations by the US immigration agency ICE, Mexico plans to take legal action. Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reported that three Mexicans have died in deportation raids and 14 more in detention centers.

Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco called it a “painful tragedy” and announced that Mexico, on the orders of Claudia Sheinbaum, will proceed not only diplomatically but also legally. Plans include filing criminal complaints with the prosecutors’ offices of the affected US states and with the US Department of Justice.

Additionally, Mexico intends to file civil lawsuits against the private companies that operate ICE detention centers. The latest incident occurred on July 7 in Houston, where Mexican Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot dead during an ICE operation. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Salgado disobeyed orders, rammed a patrol vehicle with his car, and then tried to hit an officer with his vehicle, prompting an ICE agent to open fire.

Family members, civil rights organizations, and Democratic politicians are calling for an independent investigation of the operation. Mexico now wants to legally review the deaths.
