Anne Applebaum: Ukraine Is Becoming Europe’s Security Provider

Historian and journalist Anne Applebaum sees Ukraine in a new role: no longer just a recipient of security assistance, but increasingly a security provider for Europe. She said this in an exclusive interview with the Kyiv Post.

Historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum said she experienced Ukraine at a “very interesting turning point.” Speaking to the Kyiv Post after interviewing the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, at the Security Architecture Forum in Kyiv on June 1, she said the world’s perception of Ukraine is fundamentally changing.

“Ukraine is no longer just a poor country that we need to help, but increasingly a security provider, not just a security consumer,” Applebaum said. The reason, she argued, lies in Ukraine’s military achievements, particularly in drone warfare. As an example, she noted that Gulf states, early in the war, first asked Ukraine for advice on countering drones from Iran.

Applebaum stressed that Ukraine should seize this moment to actively help shape Europe’s future security architecture. The changed perception opens up new diplomatic and strategic opportunities for the country, she said.
