The BBC reports that its editorial team has identified Yuriy Temerbek, whom former prisoners accuse of involvement in torture at the secret prison ‘Isolation.’ Temerbek, a former Ukrainian traffic police officer, is said to have joined pro-Russian separatists after the Russian occupation.
Liudmyla Huseynova, 64, who was abducted in 2019, says Temerbek was present when she was subjected to sexualized violence by a man with a Russian accent. She describes her detention as a ‘nightmare.’ The BBC worked with Ukrainian open-source investigators to identify Temerbek and two other suspected perpetrators.
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) describes torture and ill-treatment in Russian-controlled areas as ‘systematic and widespread.’ Ukrainian authorities estimate over 16,000 civilians have been abducted or gone missing. The BBC investigation shows that the accused apparently live openly with their families in Russia or the occupied territories.
