On Friday morning, as children were on their way to school, several students observed a beaver being struck by a train in the track bed at Türkenfeld station. Part of the beaver’s tail was severed. The animal survived the accident.

Several of the children who had witnessed the accident prepared to retrieve the animal from the tracks on their own. The tracks were therefore closed. Federal police eventually recovered the injured animal and handed it over to the district beaver officer of Fürstenfeldbruck.

Numerous schoolchildren had directly experienced the incident and were visibly distressed. Some did not attend classes afterward, in consultation with their parents. At the Türkenfeld primary and secondary school, the principal organized psychological support services.

The beaver officer offered a visit to the wildlife rehabilitation center so the children could follow the beaver’s recovery. The animal – a female named Barbara – is to be taken to France after its recovery, where suitable habitats exist.
