Kiel has found a successor for the dismissed head coach Filip Jicha: Börge Lund, 47, is returning to the fjord city. The Norwegian signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2028, as the club announced on Wednesday. Lund played for the “Zebras” from 2007 to 2010, winning three German championships and the Champions League among other titles.
Most recently, Lund coached Norwegian club Elverum Handball, which he had led as head coach since 2020. With Elverum, he won the Norwegian championship twice and the cup once. THW managing director Viktor Szilagyi praised his work: “He has done an outstanding job in Elverum in recent years, shaping a competitive team from young and experienced players.” Lund himself spoke of “coming home” and called THW “the greatest club in the world.”
Kiel finished last season only in sixth place, missing a European Cup spot for the first time in 33 years. As a result, Jicha was dismissed despite having a contract until 2028. Lund is now expected to lead the new beginning with the restructured team.
