Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced this after the second meeting of a steering group involving federal, state, and local authorities in Bonn. The damage to the structure of the heavily used Rhine bridge is even greater than initially assumed, Schnieder said. The bridge, part of the A565 motorway, was unexpectedly closed on June 3 due to serious structural defects.

The new bridge is expected to reopen to traffic by the end of 2028 at the latest. According to Schnieder, speed is now the priority. The tendering process will start immediately so that demolition can begin as early as July. Motorists must prepare for longer detours.

In September 2024, part of the Carolabrücke in Dresden collapsed.
