According to the survey, 51 percent of respondents consider the capital’s Olympic ambitions rather good, 40 percent rather bad, and nine percent did not express an opinion. Brandenburg’s parliament and government support the plans with venues in the state.
Berlin is applying together with Brandenburg, Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for national approval from the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region are also in the running for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Games. Hamburg dropped out after a rejecting citizen referendum.
On September 26, the DOSB will decide on the German bid. According to the “Berlin +” concept, competitions are to take place in the partner states. In Brandenburg, planned venues include the regatta course on Beetzsee, golf in Bad Saarow, football in Cottbus, shooting in Hoppegarten, and cycling in Potsdam.
Approval varies by age and party: 62 percent of 16- to 34-year-olds are in favor, but only 45 percent of those over 65. Among CDU supporters, approval stands at 67 percent, among AfD supporters at 46 percent. For the survey, 1,159 eligible voters were surveyed from June 18 to 22.
