Christian Schmidt, who has overseen the post-war order in Bosnia and Herzegovina since August 2021, announced his resignation as representative on Monday. The CSU politician stated that he is doing this “with a heavy heart” and appears to be under pressure from the Trump administration. Schmidt heads the Office of the High Representative (OHR), which was originally intended as a temporary measure to oversee the post-war order in accordance with the 1995 Dayton Agreement.

In his role, the High Representative holds extraordinary powers, including the ability to enact laws and dismiss elected officials. Schmidt expressed concern about the increasingly dangerous political climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina and warned the UN Security Council of a “progressive dismantling of state institutions” as well as a resurgence of inflammatory rhetoric.

His resignation could have far-reaching consequences for stability in the region, as the OHR plays a central role in maintaining peace and political order. Throughout his tenure, Schmidt has faced criticism and attacks, highlighting the challenges of his position.
